Steven Universe is my universe

Steven Universe

This show airs on Cartoon Network, and it's basically a coming of age story about this boy, Steven, who is being raised by alien guardians who work together to protect the earth from not-so-good aliens. The show's creator, Rebecca Sugar, used to be a story board artist, I think, for Adventure Time, and you can see the influences, but overall, this show is quite different and also has much more depth.

So yeah, I really like this show for so many reasons.

Liiiike, how it breaks gender stereotypes!  I feel like this show wouldn't necessarily be categorized as a "boy's" show or a "girl's" show as most cartoons seem to be created to be.  If anything, only because the protagonist is male, this show might be said to be aimed at a male audience, but that's stretching it.  I think this show has a lot to offer for all viewers regardless of gender, and it's awesome because technically, the Crystal Gems are gender neutral...because they're humanoid manifestations of these rocks and jewels.  They go by the "she" pronoun, but nothing about them is stereotypically female.  Even the character Pearl, who seems to be the most mom-like character and exhibits habits of someone who would be labeled a "clean freak," isn't all that stereotypically female.  She's just a person who likes to do chores and keep things neat to (maybe) an exaggerated extent.  There are people, biologically male, female, o whatever, who can relate to that.  It's actually really interesting because by staying away from gender stereotypes and just being very well-developed cartoon personalities, it normalizes behaviors of what basically is us, human beings.  Your gender doesn't set your personality or all of your habits.  I think this is really great!

Even Steven, he's just a kid.  He exhibits what might be considered "male" behavior, such as wanting to be heroic and being messy, but he also exhibits what might be considered "female" behavior, such as being emotionally sensitive and unashamed to cry when feeling moved or sad and being empathetic and trying to understand others' perspectives (which, by the way, is not a feminine thing.  It's a human thing!  All good human beings should try to adopt others' perspectives in order to understand them and get along better!)  And even these "male" and "female" behaviors are exhibited by other characters who aren't male, such as Amethyst, a Gem, being messy and Connie, a girl, wanting to be heroic.  All of these traits along with Steven's inherent naivety make him an excellent and believable portrayal of what a child is.  So, I think this show is great for children, for girls and boys, because Steven is such a great role model (with a pretty good moral compass).

Another thing I like about this show is its art style.  It's really fun and bright, and I enjoy all the ridiculous facial expressions.  Pictured here is an example of what I mean, courtesy of the tumblr of Ian Jones-Quartey, an artist for the show.

This show is hilarious, and it's funny in a wholesome way without you even realizing it.  It pokes at its ow characters' flaws but never in a negative way.  It's always done lovingly so you feel like you're laughing with them.  If it ever feels dark, it's because of the truth in comedy.  A lot of things that are funny are funny because they are true.  I think viewers of all ages can laugh along and really identify with some of the characters and situations.

One thing I also really enjoy about this series is that there is a consistent underlying plot that moves not too fast and not too slow.  The pacing is great.  And each episode's story is cute and still captivating even if it doesn't seem to further the plot.  (Except that Uncle Grandpa episode.  I was not a fan of that collaboration, but even though it wasn't cute to me, we did see a furthering of the plot and a tiny bit of character development, even if it was minuscule in comparison to all the Uncle Grandpa nonsense.)

So yeah, this show is great, and I love it, and I rambled on about it for a long time now, and I totally recommend it.  10/10

EDIT:  Oh my god!!  I ranted on about this show, and I totally forgot to mention how much I love the music in this show!  It's another aspect I really enjoy, which is all the singing making this show part-musical.  It's really great.  :P
